Books Not Bombs: Education in the Streets One stealth bomber: salary for 38,000 elementary school teachers One hour of war in Iraq: improvements, repairs and modernizations to 20 public schools One cluster bomb: enrollment for 2 children in Head Start One non-typical protest: priceless Get some real education: THE TEMPORARY AUTONOMOUS ZONE Thursday, March 4th, 4:00 pm 15th & Market Streets, Center City Philadelphia with a free concert, including Evan Greer and others, and an open mic! Our generation continues to be betrayed by this government's drive to make our country an empire. The policy of pre-emptive war and occupation stands in contradiction to and undermines the advancement of young people's rights and the fulfillment of our needs. The billions going to fund the U.S. occupation of Iraq -- an occupation which continues to kill innocents every day -- would be better used making reparations to that country and funding the future of American youth. In place of decent jobs and schools, young people have been given military recruiters, who get students' information without their permission. Low-income youth and youth of color have been extensively targeted by military recruiters just as they have been consistently denied access to higher education. The temporary autonomous zone will give students the opportunity to express themselves and learn from each other rather than being told what to think. * fix your bike * play the banjo * basic protest medical * puppet making * alternative u.s. history * make your own zine * homemade tofu * make a really big banner * sing wobbly songs * HIV prevention * pirate radio stations * AND MUCH MORE! (what will you bring?) What is a Temporary Autonomous Zone? T.A.Z. is a love poem scrawled on the sterilized and unconscious wall of a hospital. It is a 4 a.m. Shakespeare reading with your cellmates in Miami. It is a Palestinian youth tearing down a part of the Wall with his bare hands. Our T.A.Z. will be a peaceful place without rules or regulations, without teachers and students, without bosses and employees. We will manifest our vision of how the world could be a better place, and how human interactions could be based on love and solidarity rather than exploitation and greed. The temporary autonomous zone will be a nonviolent safe space for all -- please check your stereotypes, police batons, tear gas and prejudices at the gates!
